Farm Bill '08
"It's as if this farm bill is being negotiated in a vacuum." Congress has until Friday to hammer out our new national agriculture policy.

Congress, Dumb Internet Talk, Yadda
"To me, the Web is a necessary evil." You know who we probably don't want making that statement? The person in charge of governing how a whole house of Congress interacts with the Internets. Argh.

The context is YouTube's construction of a walled garden for congressional videos. (Thx Adam G.)

How Lessig's Change Congress Will Work
Lessig's saying that his Change Congress project will use a wiki-map mashup to track pledges made by electeds to existing reform groups.

UPDATE: At 1:30 today, watch the live video of Lessig's Change Congress presentation at the National Press Club.

Lessig, Trippi, and a Motivating Lack of Fora

Deciphering Joe Trippi's Twitter stream: "Just landed in San Francisco to meet potential candidate for Congress" (about 4 hours ago) --> "Larry Lessig" (about 4 hours ago) --> "Tot" (about 4 hours ago). Is Trippi having a spot of rum, or slangily expressing his approval for a Lessig run? Twitter less cryptically, Joe! You left 137 characters on the table.

Also, one thing driving a possible Lessig for Congress campaign? "Government corruption" doesn't get asked to the dance all that often:

When I was doing free culture stuff, there were hundreds of fora every year where people wanted to talk about these issues. There are no industry conferences on political corruption, and I quickly realized this was going to be harder to talk about than I had expected.

Why the Time is Wrong on Your Cell Phone
Is your cell phone showing the wrong time? Mine is. Electronics not set to pull "network time" think that Daylight Saving Time ended this Sunday, ignorant that Congress has extended it a week.

Shield Law
The House just passed a federal shield law for journalists by a huge margin. I'm a bit surprised there hasn't been more debate over how broadly "journalism" is defined: "the regular gathering, preparing, collecting, photographing, recording, writing, editing, reporting, or publishing of news or information that concerns local, national, or international events or other matters of public interest for dissemination to the public."

A thousand bucks for your congressman's schedule.
A thousand bucks for your congressman's schedule. The Sunlight Foundation's Punch Clock campaign is offering a reward if you can convince your Rep. to make his or her calendar public online.

Ed Felten critiques the argument that Sen. Ted "my staff sent me an Internet" Stevens wishes he had made.

Ed Felten critiques the argument that Sen. Ted "my staff sent me an Internet" Stevens wishes he had made. (I agree with Felten. I've said all along -- in my own head -- that, replace "tubes" with "pipes," and Stevens's metaphor-laden speech is far from the most ignorant understanding of the Internet one hears in Congress. Still it's funny to hear him mutter "tubes!" like he's a real life Mr. Burns.)

Congress has again set its laser-like focus upon the pressing issues of our times.

Congress has again set its laser-like focus upon the pressing issues of our times: "Even though many voters may be hard-pressed to remember the last time they saw Old Glory being torched, the Senate will devote a good chunk of the week to the proposed [flag burning] amendment."
UPDATE: Number of flag burnings reported last year? Four. 4. Cuatro.

State Department computers

Congressman objects to introducing 16,000 new computers bought from a Beijing-affiliated company to the State Department network. "This could be a problem. Everyone remembers the problem with the American Embassy in Russia."
